Reviewing Potential Workplace Hazards
The first place to begin an effective Safety Loss Control Program according to recent Hartford Insurance Company publications is to initiate a review of potential workplace hazards.
Here are some questions that you need to be regularly asking about your workplace facility:
1. Are your floors regularly cleared of all materials that could cause someone to trip?
2. Is the lighting good in all areas?
3. Can you find any electrical hazards that could possibly cause an accident?
4. Are any storage areas potential hazards from explosive situations or other potential danger?
5. When have you last inspected all such worksites?
6. Have all your employees received proper and regular workplace safety training? Do they know what to do in case of an accident?
7. Are any tools, machines or equipment in need of repair? Are appropriate guards in place on your employee machines and tools? Have your employees all been trained to not remove or bypass the guards?
8. Have all employees received training on necessary personal protective equipment and where required have they been properly fitted?
9. Is all ventilation adequate, especially in any confined spaces?
10. Have any employees complained of headaches, breathing problems, or dizziness recently? What steps would you take or have you taken to fix these problems?
These are only sample questions. Feel free to add more questions of your own that are more important to your unique operation.
Every time you find a condition that could potentially become dangerous, you need to record the date you found it, the time, and also your planned steps for taking the appropriate action to correct the situation.
